Representing Georgia: Who I Am

My Story

Ever since I was a little girl, I have known the importance of political action. I was born in Joliet, Illinois on June 1st, 1960. It was there that my father served as the Illinois Branch President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). I grew up with my mother Wilma, who worked as a nurse, and my sister, Lori. As a young child, I was brought along to civil rights rallies and marches, learning along the way about the importance of community involvement and standing up against injustice.

These experiences led me to pursue a degree in political science at Virginia State University. Soon after my time at VSU, I moved to Georgia and became a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for thirty years. There, I made a life for myself, my husband Curtis, and my kids.

Now, the story of my arrival to politics is unorthodox. In 2012, my son Jordan was shot and killed at a gas station when a man was upset with the music he played in his car. I realized that in order to stop tragedies like this, our country needs to change. I decided to take the initiative and be at the forefront of the movement against gun violence. In 2013, I became the National Spokesperson for Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety, an organization working to better the gun laws in the United States and protect our children from gun violence. I was also involved in Everytown for Gun Safety and Mothers of the Movement, a group for African American mothers whose lives have been impacted by gun violence.

But I knew that taking the fight to Congress would be the best way to address the issue and change the system, which is why I ran as a Democrat for the United States House of Representatives in 2018. People across Georgia's District 6 heard my story and knew that I would do what it takes to protect our communities when I'm in the Legislature. On January 3rd, 2019, I was sworn into office for the first time and I promise to continue the fight to create a safer America for future generations.
